The IMaST curriculum is built on major themes that are presented in modules. IMaST has developed each theme by having all disciplines focus on several key concepts that lead toward the same objective. IMaST has developed its activities using benchmarks, national standards, and state frameworks. These activities are all carefully coordinated to help students grasp the many natural interdisciplinary connections in the curriculum.
An individual IMaST module has a title theme that is followed throughout the textbook. The 6th grade modules are developed in a series called "Patterns …" that present learning cycles which integrate all three disciplines while the 7th and 8th grade modules have separate, coordinated activities within each module for mathematics, science, and technology. The 7th and 8th grade modules are designed slightly differently from the 6th grade modules because the latter also accommodates both a K-6 as well as a 6 through 8 paradigm.
The first IMaST Module, Tools for Learning, has been designed to serve as an introduction to the tools such as observation, design, data display, etc. used throughout the IMaST program. This module is designed to last for aprroximately four weeks.
IMaST has produced the 6th grade modules in a patterns series. This series includes Patterns of Mobility, Patterns Within Us, Patterns Above Us , Patterns in Weather, Patterns Above Us, and Patterns Below Us. IMaST intends that each module last for approximately four weeks.
The 7th grade modules, including The Body Works, Living on the Edge, and Shaping Our World, are of 6 weeks duration each while the modules on Manufacturing and Forecasting are meant to last for nine weeks.
IMaST has designed all the 8th grade modules, including Animal Habitats, Human Settlements, Systems, and Communication Pathways, to last for nine weeks.
