Improving the Teaching of Mathematics through Lesson Study (ITMLS)

Goal

The goal of the ITMLS Program is to improve the teaching and learning of PreK-16 mathematics in Illinois.

Objectives

The objectives of ITMLS are:

  • To form a partnership between the Illinois State Board of Education and the seven state universities that graduate and place the greatest number of PreK-12 mathematics teachers in Illinois schools.
  • To facilitate activities that will help the partners become well informed about the use of lesson study as a means of improving the teaching and learning of mathematics.
  • To use lesson study as a means of professional development in PreK-12 schools.
  • To assess the challenges, benefits, and barriers to the use of lesson study as a means of improving the teaching and learning of mathematics.
  • To write a proposal for a Development Grant to form a Center for Learning and Teaching funded by the National Science Foundation.

ITMLS Partner Schools

The ITMLS project is housed at the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology, located on the campus of Illinois State University.

Other universities throughout the state of Illinois are involved with the ITMLS program, along with elementary and secondary schools where the ITMLS project is put into action.
